The perfect weekend between the sea, historic villages and breathtaking views really exists—and it’s waiting for you in Castagneto Carducci and its surroundings.
This area of Tuscany combines the beauty of the coastline with rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive groves: the ideal escape for anyone looking for an unforgettable experience. In this post, we suggest a two-day itinerary (plus a few extra ideas if you have more time) to help you enjoy this destination we proudly call home at Hotel I Ginepri.
Day 1: Castagneto Carducci & Bolgheri
Morning: Discover Castagneto Carducci
Start your trip with a stroll through the heart of Castagneto Carducci, a charming hilltop village overlooking the sea. Its cobbled streets, historic buildings and panoramic terraces make it the perfect introduction to the area.
What to see in Castagneto Carducci?
Here are the highlights:
- The Castello dei Della Gherardesca dominates the village and offers beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. Although privately owned and used for events, it’s worth visiting from the outside to soak in its thousand-year history.
- The poet Giosuè Carducci spent part of his life here. Two places celebrate his legacy: Casa Carducci and the Museo Archivio Carducciano, which displays books, photographs and manuscripts.
- If you’re interested in local traditions, visit the Piccolo Museo dell’Olio, where you can discover traditional tools used to produce extra-virgin olive oil.
- For stunning views, don’t miss the panoramic frame in Piazza Belvedere, part of a project by the winery Le Macchiole.

Afternoon: Bolgheri & Wine
In the afternoon, head to Bolgheri, one of the most charming villages in the area, famous for its iconic Viale dei Cipressi, celebrated in the poetry of Giosuè Carducci.
- Wander through its medieval streets and picturesque corners
- Browse artisan shops and wine bars
- Visit one of the renowned wineries producing some of Italy’s finest wines, such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia
End your day with an aperitivo in the main square, enjoying the magical atmosphere of Bolgheri at sunset.
Evening: Dinner with Local Flavors
To end the day on a high note, enjoy dinner at our restaurant at Hotel I Ginepri, where you can taste traditional dishes paired with excellent local wines.

Day 2: Sea, Nature & Relaxation
Morning: Relax on the Beach
After a day exploring villages and vineyards, it’s time to unwind by the sea. The beaches of Marina di Castagneto Carducci are perfect for a relaxing morning.
At Hotel I Ginepri, we have our own fully equipped beach club, also open to non-guests (just contact us for availability). Hotel guests always have umbrellas, sun loungers and deck chairs at their disposal.
If the weather isn’t ideal, you can consider visiting a spa or exploring alternative indoor activities.

Afternoon: Nature & Outdoor Adventures
In the afternoon, choose between the many natural parks and reserves in the area.
Some of our favorites include:
- The Parco Costiero di Rimigliano, a protected area where you can walk through pine forests and sand dunes
- The Oasi WWF di Bolgheri (open from October to May), home to rare migratory birds and wildlife such as wild boars, deer, porcupines and badgers
Alternatively, you can:
- go horseback riding along the beach
- cycle along the coastal path connecting Marina di Castagneto to San Vincenzo

One More Day? Here’s What to Do!
If you’re lucky enough to stay longer, here are some great options:
Option 1: Inland Escape
Visit Sassetta, a medieval village surrounded by forests and known for its natural hot springs. Relax at the Terme di Sassetta, where thermal water flows at 50°C in a stunning natural setting.
Option 2: Explore the Val di Cornia Parks
The Val di Cornia includes several towns such as Piombino, Campiglia Marittima, Suvereto, Sassetta and San Vincenzo.
This area stretches from the coast facing Isola d’Elba to the inland hills and offers many attractions, including the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro and the Parco Forestale di Poggio Neri.
Option 3: Food & Wine Experience
For food lovers, a tour of local farms is a must. Taste extra-virgin olive oil, honey, cheeses and, of course, the famous wines of the Bolgheri DOC.
