Castagneto Carducci: 10 Things to Do in the Surroundings

Our post about what to do in Marina di Castagneto Carducci was incredibly popular, so we decided to create another itinerary covering the entire area of Castagneto Carducci.

This is a loop itinerary that can be done either by car or by bike, starting and ending at Hotel I Ginepri.

Ready to explore Castagneto Carducci with us? Let’s go!

10 Things to Do in Castagneto Carducci and Nearby

1. Marina

Hotel I Ginepri is located right by the sea in Marina di Castagneto Carducci, surrounded by a lush pine forest.

Take some time to explore this area, wandering through the small paths that run through the pinewood. These gentle ups and downs, shaded by tall pine trees, offer beautiful views over the sea and the sand dunes.

2. Bolgheri Wildlife Oasis

Leaving Marina behind and crossing the railway overpass, turn left towards Bolgheri along the old Via Aurelia.

After about two kilometres, follow the signs for the Oasi WWF di Bolgheri (Padule di Bolgheri), our second stop.

This wildlife refuge covers more than 500 hectares and is home to many animal species. It can be visited by reservation until May 31st. During the summer months (June–August), night trekking experiences are also available, offering the chance to spot storks, deer, wild boars and other wildlife.

3. The Cypress Avenue

Back on the main road, continue towards Bolgheri until you reach the junction with the famous Viale dei Cipressi, one of the most iconic places in the area.

Before driving along this world-famous road, stop in San Guido, where you’ll find the Oratorio di San Guido, made famous by the poem “Davanti a San Guido” by Giosuè Carducci.

4. The Bellaria Oak

The next stop is Bellaria, home to the famous oak tree of the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia.

Leaving San Guido behind, just before reaching Bolgheri, take the road towards Via Bibbonese. After a few kilometres, you’ll find a dirt road leading uphill through the vineyards of Bellaria. At the top stands the iconic oak tree—an unmissable stop for photographers and lovers of Tuscan landscapes.

5. Bolgheri

Head back to Via Bolgherese and continue towards the village.

Now it’s finally time to enjoy a glass of Bolgheri wine right where it is produced (as long as you’re not driving!). Bolgheri is small and perfect to explore on foot: stroll through its charming streets and enjoy every corner.

7. Castagneto Carducci

At the end of Via Bolgherese, turn left and head up to Castagneto Carducci, named in honor of the poet Giosuè Carducci.

Take a walk through its narrow streets and steep stairways. Highlights include:

  • Casa Carducci and the archive museum
  • The historic Premiata Fabbrica di Liquori Emilio Borsi
  • The panoramic terrace of Piazza Belvedere, offering stunning views over the surrounding countryside

8. Accattapane & Donoratico Tower

Now it’s time to head downhill from Castagneto.

Instead of returning directly to Donoratico, continue towards Accattapane, where vineyards and rolling hills create unforgettable scenery.

A worthwhile detour leads to the Torre di Donoratico, the remains of a castle built by the Della Gherardesca to defend the coast from pirate raids.

9. Pianetti Beach

The Accattapane road ends near the old Aurelia road, close to the turn-off for I Pianetti.

From here, follow the signs to the parking areas and continue on foot through Mediterranean vegetation and pine forest. Beyond the dunes, you’ll find a quiet stretch of beach with clear, shallow waters—perfect for a peaceful swim away from the crowds.

10. Donoratico

Before returning to Marina, stop in Donoratico.

While less touristy than other areas, it offers shops, supermarkets and local services. Take a short walk through the town centre and perhaps pick up something before heading back.

From here, it’s just a couple of kilometres to return to Hotel I Ginepri.

Your journey through our beautiful territory comes to an end—we hope you enjoyed it!
