3 villages to visit in Tuscany from Hotel i Ginepri

Hotel I Ginepri is located in Marina di Castagneto Carducci, part of the wider area known as the Costa degli Etruschi.

This region stretches from Livorno to Piombino and includes not only the coastline but also inland towns such as Collesalvetti, Sassetta, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima.

The charm of this area lies not only in its beautiful coastline and sea, but also in the treasures hidden within its villages—places with thousands of years of history, from the many Etruscan necropolises that give the area its name to perfectly preserved medieval towns.

Today we’ll take you to some of our favorite villages on the Costa degli Etruschi. Let’s get started!

Populonia

(about 28 km from Hotel I Ginepri)

Populonia is best known for its archaeological park, but the village itself—set on top of a hill—is not to be missed.

It still preserves its 14th-century walls, built to defend against pirate attacks. Its narrow streets reflect the layout of a medieval village, and its fortress overlooking the sea offers breathtaking views of the Tuscan Archipelago and the surrounding plains.

On your way down the scenic road connecting Populonia Alta to Baratti, you can stop at the Parco Archeologico di Baratti e Populonia, where you’ll find some of the most important remains of Etruscan settlements in the area.

Campiglia Marittima

(about 20 km from Hotel I Ginepri)

Don’t be misled by the name “Marittima”: Campiglia Marittima is actually located inland, perched on a hill overlooking the sea and surrounding countryside.

The municipality also includes Venturina Terme, a well-known spa destination dating back to Etruscan and Roman times.

Campiglia is an ancient medieval village where cobbled streets, narrow alleys and historic buildings tell stories that span centuries. The historic centre is enclosed by walls and filled with artisan shops, museums, restaurants and landmarks such as the Palazzo Pretorio di Campiglia Marittima, dating back to the 13th century.

Don’t miss the Pieve di San Giovanni and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo.

Also worth visiting is the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro—especially if you love nature and history (and children will absolutely love it!). Here you can explore the medieval village of Rocca San Silvestro, the Archaeology and Minerals Museum, and the Miniera del Temperino, which can be visited wearing a helmet.

Bibbona

(about 23 km from Hotel I Ginepri)

Bibbona is an ancient village surrounded by woods and countryside.

Originally built as a fortified settlement, it still retains its historic charm through narrow streets and stone-paved squares. Highlights include the Pieve di San Ilario (11th century), the Renaissance Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe and the old town hall, Palazzo del Comune Vecchio.

Nearby, Marina di Bibbona—also known as Marina del Forte for the historic fort still visible on the beach—is characterized by sandy shores, dunes, Mediterranean vegetation and pine forests.
